The Truth About Abs: Lower Ab Development

One of the most-asked questions that I get online regarding building abs is, “How do you get your lower abs to show?  What exercise should I do?”  This is definitely a thing because we do train our abs frequently on CoryG Fitness and speak about them at length here at Max Effort Muscle.

You can do all the crunches, ab wheels, leg lifts, toes to bar, etc. in the world, but if your body fat is too high then you will not be able to see them.  This carries significant weight with getting the lower abdomen to show.

Most people that get their body fat percentage to around 10% can see their upper abs, especially if they have been working and developing them over time.  That being said, if you aren’t taking your conditioning and diet seriously it doesn’t matter how many toes to bar you do, your lower abs will still not show because of your body fat percentage is too high.  In order to truly see your lower abs, your body fat must be around 8% or lower.  IT’S JUST THE TRUTH.

When people ask me why they can’t see their lower abs the answer is two-fold.  Yes, you need to implement toes to bar, cable crunches, ab wheels, etc. but you must get leaner.  While this is usually the answer that people don’t want to hear, it’s the hard truth.

I’ve been training for a very long time and have been able to pretty much always see my upper abs.  This is unquestionably due to keeping my body fat percentage between 10-12% no matter what is going on and putting in the training volume.

If you want to get your lower abs to pop, it requires a whole new level of discipline.  You’ll have to be in the 7-8% range at the minimum.  If this is what you really want, you must understand that this plays a vital role when it comes to seeing your lower abs.
