Here’s some cold, harsh reality for you guys: not everyday is going to be your best day. You won’t set a PR every week or always see growth on your biceps. You probably won’t be gaining fifteen to twenty pounds of lean muscle fast. And you won’t become the strongest guy or gal in the gym overnight. It just doesn’t work that way.


Lifting weights, regardless of your motive, whether it be for size, looks, or strength, will take time. By time, I mean, a lot of time. Hours upon hours, day in and day out, month after month, year after year, of consistency, hard work, and dedication to get results, and reach genuine goals. There is no secret to the weight lifting game. So if you want to achieve a certain look or strength, be prepared for a long term investment.

Too often I am asked about lifting with how to achieve goals “fast”. How can I gain lean muscle… fast? How can I get stronger… fast? There is absolutely nothing fast about it. Once you decide you want to set out to achieve a specifc goal, instill it in your brain that there will be no easy way to get there. You will have to grind though the process, day in, and day out!


Imagine if the five minute abs commercial really did work. Imagine if all it took was three days a week with a combined total of fifteen minutes to get shredded, rock hard abs. Would that be cool? Probably not. It would probably make having abs less cool actually. Abs, strength, and sculpted physiques are so sought after because they are hard to achieve. If it were easy, why would anyone care to look good or be strong? If all it took was fifteen minutes a week you wouldn’t be reading this article. If all it took was fifteen minutes a week no one would give a shit about being strong or jacked because anyone would be able to do it, and do it fast…

Great things take time, that’s something we should all know by now. Trust me, I get it – you have been in the gym for three years working your ass off day in and day out and you still aren’t where you want to be. Guess what homie, add another ten years to that and you will STILL not be where you want to be. You may begin to become happy with where you are and how far you’ve came but you will never truly become content. It’s just a part of the game, you learn to love the grind and eventually, once you get to where you wanted to be, you’ll want to be somewhere else – enough will never become enough.


So here’s the deal: strap up. Get your mind set for the long hall. You might not be where you want to be right now, but someday you will be, or at least be where you wanted to be. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll get there and have to keep on going. The iron has a way of separating those who want it and those who say they want it. If you truly want it, you will stick around until you get it. If you just say you want it, well, the iron will break you. Physically, you won’t get the results you want and mentally, that will break you. That’s what the iron does – it separates the strong from the weak. It’s not about who the strongest guy in the gym is today, it’s about who’s going to be the biggest, strongest guy in the gym in five, ten, maybe fifteen years! Will it be you? Do you have what it takes to outlast the iron? Time will tell…
