3 Tips For Your First Powerlifting Meet

Powerlifting is becoming more of a known sport in recent years. Though it has been around for years, through the connection and accessibility of social media it is now reaching new heights. Because of this, more and more people are getting involved in the sport. As people prepare for their first meet it can be nerve wracking. Since most people have never lifted in front of large crowds before, they don’t know what to expect. Not only do you have to lift in front of crowds, but you have to do so in a singlet! HA. Since I’ve done dozens and dozens of meets I have a few tips for those of you getting ready for your first one.

First, DO NOT worry about cutting weight. I get it, you want to cut weight so that you have a better chance at being more competitive, setting a state or national record, etc. It’s not worth it though. This is your first meet and there are so many unknowns from the depth of your squat that the judges will call, to how long you have to pause on your bench clear, and what to eat on meet day. By no means should you add in another factor that will stress you out in this new situation. Cutting weight is hard and putting it on efficiently is just as hard. If you don’t know how to, or can’t put it back on effectively, it will be more taxing on your body and you’ll lose more pounds off of the bar. You don’t want this on your first meet. Your only goal should be setting a new PR.

Make sure that you look over the rulebook for the federation in which you’re competing. Make sure that any equipment you intend to use is allowed by that federation. You do not want to make the mistake of training in 3 meter knee wraps for 10 weeks when the federation only allows 2.5 meters.

HAVE FUN. I know, it sounds cliche, but it’s the truth. As I said, I’ve competed dozens of times and for only one reason; I have a blast doing it. I get to challenge myself and compete against other like-minded individuals. The only reason I lift weights is because I love it. If it wasn’t fun then I would have no desire to do it. So do what makes you happy, enjoy the whole experience and soak it in because before you know it your first meet will be over and you’ll be even hungrier to get back out there and compete again.
