3 Keys to Success

Dustin Myers

Let’s imagine a scenario. You have found something you are passionate about and you are positive that it is what you want to spend your life doing. Maybe it’s owning a gym, maybe it’s becoming a doctor, or maybe it’s starting your own marketing/consulting business. Whatever it is, now that you have found your calling, this should be easy right? After all, you are very passionate about this, and people always say that if you find a career you love, then you never work a day in your life.

I’ve got news for you - that’s not how it works. Just because you are pursuing something that you love doesn’t mean the path will be any easier. In fact, I would argue that your path to success will be harder than others who follow someone else’s path. To be successful on your own terms requires a ton of effort and a solid base of productive habits to keep you moving in the right direction. Passion alone will not carry you.

So now that you have accepted that it’s going to take more than just the “love of the game” to accomplish your goals…what DO you need to do? There are many keys to being successful, but let’s start with what I would consider the 3 most crucial.

1. Wake up early.

I’ve met many successful people in my life, and the one thing that they all had in common is that they do not sleep in. There is something oddly satisfying when you wake up early and knock out some tasks. It could be as simple as returning emails, going for a run, or planning your strategy for the day while the rest of the world is hitting snooze. And remember, if your goal involves being your own boss, that means waking up early on the weekends too. There are no true “days off” when you are self- employed. Some people need more sleep than others (I fall into this category), so if your early mornings are draining you, try going to bed earlier. Those reruns of America’s Got Talent and the hour you spend each night browsing Facebook are not adding value to your life. Go to bed, wake up early, and get after it. If you stay in bed longer than necessary each morning, not only are you missing out on valuable time to work towards your goal, but you are giving your competition a head start.

2. Be consistent.

It’s easy to work really hard when the sun is shining and you feel great. Can you put in that same quality effort day in, day out, when things may or may not be going your way?  Be consistent in your efforts, actions, and your interactions with others. No one wants to do business with someone unpredictable. Work hard, show up early, and do what you say you are going to do. Most people tend to “over promise and under deliver” - you should strive to do the opposite if you want to succeed.

3. Pursue big goals with confidence.

Everyone has big goals. But if you want those goals to become reality you need to pursue them with confidence. Don’t be afraid to state them out loud. I’ve been fortunate enough to be around many high level athletes and entrepreneurs and they always state their ambitions as fact. It’s never a meek “uhh…it would be cool if someday maybe I made it to like the Olympics or something.” It’s more of “I am going to be an Olympic Champion.” If you want others to believe in you, you have to believe in yourself first, and you can convey that belief by boldly stating where you intend to go, and what you are planning to do.

Take these three keys and weave them into your daily values. Wake up early every day.  Be consistent in everything you do. Set big goals and pursue them with confidence.  Those 3 things alone will help align your actions and set you on the right path .- YOUR path - to success.
