“If someone were to follow you around for 24 hours and only having your actions, not your words, to consider, would they be able to guess what your goals are?”

This question was posed to me by Kyle Snyder, one of our athletes at The Ohio Regional Training Center. Without hesitation he stated that if someone were to observe him for a full day, they would know that his goal is to be the greatest wrestler in the world. Three months after our conversation, Kyle, a 20 year old rising junior in college, became the youngest American wrestler in history to win an Olympic Gold Medal in Rio.

Everyone has big goals. I always say that you have to be able to say those goals out loud and with confidence if there is any possibility in them becoming a reality. But just being able to say them is not enough, you have to be able to align your daily habits and actions with those goals. 

Think of it this way - everything you do falls into one of two categories. An action either contributes towards reaching your goal, or ultimately somehow takes away from the possibility or delays you reaching that goal. EVERYTHING. There is no in between.  Things that seem inconsequential at the time add up to a giant road block standing in your way. The opposite is also true - getting up early, doing an extra workout, passing on the pizza and beer - productive habits add up and start to provide clarity and momentum, making your journey easier.

Next time you decide whether or not to go somewhere, to miss a workout, to play video games, to talk negatively about someone, ask yourself a question first: Is this helping or hurting my chances to fulfill the lofty expectations I have set for myself? By process of elimination, if you do not answer that “yes, it helps”, then find something else to do.

To impact as many people as possible and help them change their lives through fitness.

I don’t claim to be perfect, but I guarantee that if you observed me for a full day you would be able to identify the list above as my goals.

Sit down. Grab a pen and paper. Write down your goals and strike a line down the middle of the page. On one side of the line write “soon”, and on the other side “maybe never”. Hang this paper in a prominent location where you are bound to see it every day - maybe the bathroom mirror or your cubicle at work. When you have a choice to make, no matter how trivial it seems, refer to this paper. Choose wisely…Someone may just be watching.
