Glutamine: A Major Key In Recovery
Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid that is known for its muscle building properties, ability to aid in muscular recovery after strenuous exercise and it’s believed ability to decrease the suppression of the immune system after exercise. The term “non-essential” refers to the fact glutamine is naturally produced by the body. That being said there are numerous benefits of consuming exogenous glutamine especially when training at high intensities. Many even consider glutamine to be a “conditionally essential” amino acid due to a significant decrease in glutamine concentration when in a catabolic state such as prolonged or high intensity activity. A catabolic state refers to the condition in the body where muscle fibers and cells are being broken down, as is the case during exercise. The decreased concentration of glutamine in the muscle is linked to ammonia build up in the muscle, causing you to fatigue sooner than if glutamine concentration was higher or remained constant. In addition to harming energy production, when ammonia concentration becomes too high it can have toxic effects on the central nervous system. Obviously this is not ideal when you are trying to get bigger, leaner, stronger and faster. Glutamine plays a significant role in anabolic processes such as the rebuilding of muscle and is taken up in high quantities by cells that are dividing rapidly such as immune cells and muscle tissue that is working to repair the damage done during training. This increased uptake of glutamine further stimulates the proliferation or production of new muscle cells.
